Eligibility

To be eligible for Travelance Travel Insurance (all plans), on the effective date you must:

  • Be a resident of Canada;
  • Be under 90 years of age;
  • Not have a medical condition for which a physician has advised against travel;
  • Not have been diagnosed with a terminal sickness; and
  • Purchase the policy prior to your departure date.

For full emergency medical coverage, you must be insured under a valid Canadian GHIP or UHIP. Without GHIP/UHIP coverage, emergency medical is limited to $25,000. Applicants aged 70 and over must not reside in a retirement home, nursing home, or similar facility that provides daily assistance with mobility or medications.

Additional heart and lung exclusion: Regardless of stability, any sickness resulting from a heart condition involving nitroglycerin use more than once per week for angina, or a lung condition treated with home oxygen or oral steroids (prednisone/prednisolone), during the stability period is excluded.

A condition is stable if, during the required period, there was no new diagnosis, no new or changed treatment or medication, no worsening, no new or more frequent symptoms, no hospitalization or referral to a specialist, and no outstanding tests or planned treatment.

  • Pre-existing conditions not meeting the stability period
  • Heart condition (nitroglycerin >1×/week) or lung condition (home oxygen/oral steroids) during stability period
  • Trip undertaken against medical advice or after terminal sickness diagnosis
  • Treatment that can reasonably be delayed until return home
  • Ongoing or recurring conditions after initial emergency treatment
  • Arthritis, cataracts, gout, varicose veins, corns, calluses, bunions
  • Artificial joints within one year of surgery
  • Childbirth after 26 weeks gestation or voluntarily induced abortion
  • Mental/emotional disorders (stress, anxiety, depression) — unless admitted to hospital
  • Elective medical treatment
  • Alcohol, drugs, or sickness from long-term excessive consumption
  • Suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injury — unless admitted to hospital
  • Adventurous activities (ATV, BASE jumping, bungee jumping, hang-gliding, heli-skiing, mountain climbing, parachuting, scuba below 130 ft, skydiving)
  • Organized professional sporting activities
  • Motorcycle, moped, or scooter operation (without valid Canadian licence)
  • Motorized speed or endurance races
  • War, terrorism, riot, or armed forces participation
  • Government of Canada "Avoid All Travel" or "Avoid Non-Essential Travel" advisories in effect at departure

Claims & Emergency Assistance

Call the emergency assistance line before hospital admission or within 24 hours of a life- or organ-threatening emergency. Failure to call without reasonable cause results in you being responsible for 30% of eligible expenses (Emergency Medical plan). Submit claims as soon as reasonably possible; proof must be submitted no later than 12 months after the event.
