Eligibility

Part 1 — Applies to all applicants. As of the effective date, you must:

  • Be at least 15 days old and under 80 years of age; and
  • Be covered by a Canadian provincial or territorial Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) for the entire duration of your trip; and
  • Not be travelling against the advice of a physician.

Coverage is not available if you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness, pancreatic/liver/bone/metastatic cancer, have used home oxygen in the past 12 months, have had a major organ or bone marrow transplant, have received kidney dialysis in the past 12 months, or have an unrepaired aneurysm of 4 cm or more.

Part 2 — Additional restrictions for older travellers. Travellers aged 60–74 on trips of 31–90 days, and travellers aged 75–79 on any trip, must not have been diagnosed with, treated for, or prescribed medication for any heart condition, lung condition, cancer (other than basal/squamous cell skin cancer or any cancer treated only with hormone therapy), stroke or TIA, or diabetes (other than diet-controlled) in the 12 months before their application date.

Pre-existing Conditions & Stability

Pre-existing conditions are covered if they were stable during the required period before the effective date or departure date. A condition is stable if it required no new diagnosis, no new or changed treatment or medication, no hospitalization or surgery, and no specialist referral during the stability period.

Claims & Emergency Assistance

Contact Zurich Assistance before seeking treatment. In a serious emergency, get to hospital immediately and have someone call within 24 hours of admission and before any surgery. Failure to contact without reasonable cause may reduce the benefits payable.
